Makarios Community School

Letting Children Lead the Way

Makarios Community School is the first democratic free school for students 5 to 18 years old in the greater DFW area and is located in Grapevine, Texas.

We are not a traditional school, but rather a community of interest directed learners.

Makarios Community School is an environment in which young people are free to learn both independently and collaboratively according to their own interests and abilities. Mutual trust and respect are core community values and are reflected in student and staff members participating in the democratic process. Community rules, decision making and conflict resolution will be conducted by democratic process at weekly community meetings and judicial committee meetings.

Why Makarios?

Because your children deserve to…

Curiosity leads to research, then planning and finally development. Each interest the students develop is encouraged and supported as they discover their passions and talents.

Enjoying field trips to Bob Jones Nature Center, Lake Grapevine, local parks and museums, our community will be exposed to new concepts and skills.

Whether it is a costume, a Minecraft server, a meal or a piece of art, our students will enrich their skills with each new creative endeavor.

You’ve got to move it, move it! Dance, hikes at the lake, yoga, and many more activities are ways our students will keep their bodies and minds healthy.
